Beginning Exercises For Building Hand Technique – Getting Acquainted With Rebound Part 2

Utilizing rebound is important to playing relaxed. In this exercise we will be using a simple concept of hand technique and different sticking patterns to get our hands used to playing relaxed and letting the pad do all the work.

Let each stick get the full extension of rebound. Each stick should kick back to its highest point. Hands should be very relaxed using a combination of fingers and wrists bouncing the stick. Imagine the tip of the stick as a basketball. Let the fingers open up while still making contact with the stick. With each stroke you should have a decent amount of movement in the back of the hand. Start off slow with your metronome set to 60Bpm on 8th notes and pay close attention to the mechanics and movements.

Tip! Take your time! Be aware of your wrist movement and finger movement so that the stick rebounds back freely, while only applying pressure to throw the stick into the pad.
