Bring Me The Horizon – That’s the Spirit (2015)

Drummer: Matthew Nicholls

That’s the Spirit is a step in a softer but creative direction for Bring Me The Horizon but also it’s a testament to a more mature band. We kind of saw this coming with tracks from their last album Sempiternal, such as “Sleepwalking” and “Can You Feel My Heart”. Am I complaining? Not at all! I have been in love with this album for quite sometime now. The songwriting, lyrics, and overall vibe of the album hit home for me. The opening track “Doomed” sets the hook right off the bat with great power and an unforgettable melody from Oliver Sykes. Matt Nicholls has the spotlight on him with this linear drum fill at the beginning of “Avalanche” which lights the fuse for this power house of a song, while “Follow You” shows off Nicholls ability to groove at slower tempos playing simply for the song. There is this familiar drum fill that occurs throughout the album that’s this sixteenth note alternating pattern (1 e and ah 2 e and ah 3 lolly 4 lolly). Not sure if Matt ran out of fill ideas or if it’s just “his thing”. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it right?

Overall it’s a great album that I still keep coming back to since it’s release (September 11, 2015). If you have ever heard of Bring Me The Horizon then you should know that they are known for being a post hardcore/alternative metal band. This album steps aside from those genres and sprinkles on elements of pop and electronic music. Don’t base your decision to listen from their older releases. This is totally different!
