Fiona Apple – Extraordinary Machine (2005)

Drummers

  • Abe Laboriel, Jr. – Sailor, Better Version Of Me, Tymps, Window, Oh Well, Please Please Please, Red Red Red
  • Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson – Get Him Back, Not About Love
  • Jim Keltner – Waltz

I first heard not about love while searching on YouTube with my girlfriend for a new song for the two of us to cover. It was a clip of her live performance of the track and I was immediately pulled in by the minor chords, powerful punches, and the weird feeling I got at first listen. This album creates such an eerie mood and is truly a work of art.

The roster of drummers on this album speaks volumes! You have Abe Laboriel, Jr., Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson, and Jim Keltner. A pallet of drummers with great talent that stay just enough in the background to provide texture, rhythm, and the occasional punches to accent Fiona’s vocals. extraordinary machine has the feel of an orchestral movie score twisted with stories of broken relationships. It’s an interesting theme that keeps the ears engaged.

Check it out and tell me what you think. It’s a great album but more so a great roster of top drummers all in one package.
